This week, one of my clients, a businessMen who operates in one of the Arab countries—called me:
“Listen, Yosef, I can’t understand this. In every meeting there are hugs, kisses… Is this a business meeting or a date? Is it real warmth, or just a politeness game?”
“The codes of the language of kisses in Arab culture”
In many Arab regions, greetings and kisses are an entire social protocol.
They can signal meanings of respect, hierarchy, closeness, reconciliation, and sometimes messages about boundaries.
First, it’s important to understand that culture is complex and dynamic. There are no clear “rules” that everyone always follows. Meanings can vary between countries, and sometimes even between families. But precisely because of that, it’s worth understanding the general meanings that can apply almost anywhere.
Kissing the back of the hand:
In many traditional contexts, kissing the back of a parent’s or an older person’s hand expresses deep respect for life experience and gratitude. At times, kissing the back of the hand is perceived as flattery, and even social hypocrisy, if it is done out of self-interest toward someone of wealthy or powerful status.
A kiss on the cheek:
As most people know, a kiss on the cheek expresses longing, joy, and sometimes comfort. In most traditional contexts, this kiss is practiced mainly between people of the same sex or close relatives. Of course, there are certain social circles (such as in big cities) where there is a departure from strict tradition, but in most cases the separation is maintained in order to respect accepted boundaries of modesty and privacy.
A kiss on the forehead:
A kiss on the forehead is considered a symbol of respect, pride, and nobility, so this gesture is considered one of the strongest gestures.
Sometimes it is a way of telling someone, “I appreciate you.” In cases of conflict, kissing the injured party on the forehead is considered a deep and respectful way to ask forgiveness, while publicly acknowledging their greatness and their ability to forgive.
While many kissing gestures are accepted and openly shown in public, a kiss on the lips in public is considered an almost absolute taboo— even between married couples. This kiss is considered private and intimate, and displaying it in public can be seen as a violation of accepted values.
Bottom line: Next time you see a kiss on the hand, on the cheek, or on the forehead, you are not seeing a “weird gesture,” but a cultural code that is important to understand—and to decode the meaning behind it and the message it conveys. Yosef Mahfoud Levi.
